Obituary of Audrey Mae Cox

Please share a memory of Audrey to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Audrey Mae (Baughn) Cox, age 89, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 5, 2018, with her loving family by her side.

Born November 5, 1928, in Wilmar, CA, Audrey Mae was the daughter of the late George and Surrilda “Rilda” (Webster) Baughn.  As a toddler during the Great Depression, she and her family left California to make a new home in rural northeast Arkansas, just south of the Missouri state line on the beautiful Current River.  It was here that she was educated at the grammar schools of Huvey, AR and Currentview, MO, graduating from Doniphan High School in 1946.  In 1948, Audrey Mae married Aubrey J. “A.J.” Cox, who was raised in northeast AR, but worked in Michigan at the time, while she stayed on the farm with her mother. In 1949, Audrey Mae joined her husband in Ypsilanti, MI, where they started their family.  In 1959, the family moved to Delaware, where they continued growing their family and began a successful automotive business, Cox Auto Sales, as well as many real estate ventures. Through the years, Audrey Mae was a devoted wife and mother to their four children, as well as bookkeeper for each of the family businesses.

Audrey Mae, lovingly known as Mom-Mom to her grandchildren, enjoyed being a homemaker and raising children. She was a talented seamstress, making draperies and clothing for herself and her children, and an excellent cook known for her homemade dinner rolls.  Throughout her youth, she attended the Currentview Church of Christ, where her father had served as preacher before his premature death. In Delaware, she was a longtime member of Cedars Church of Christ, where she worked in the food pantry and was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher.

God was most important in Audrey Mae’s life, with family being a very close second, from bringing her children and their families to church at every opportunity, to spending holidays together and making sure her family’s needs were met. She will be remembered for her pureness of heart, unconditional love, and devotion to her faith and family.

In her leisure time, Audrey Mae loved to read, especially love stories and Amish novels. She was a talented pianist, who loved to play all the old classic hymns, musical scores, and listening to gospel music. Audrey Mae also enjoyed playing Sudoku and researching genealogy.

Audrey Mae was predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 ½ years, Aubrey J. “A.J.” Cox, her parents, as well as her sisters, Fern Baughn, Faye Hawkins, and Wanda Maddox. She is survived by her sons, Doyle K. Cox (Jamie) of Hockessin, DE and Glenn A. Cox (Virginia) of Cotter, AR; her daughters, Carol A. Stephano of Hockessin, DE and Donna K. Brady (Kirk) of Doniphan, MO; as well as her 11 grandchildren, Chopper (Nicole), Kendra, Felicity (Brandon), Gwendolyn, Rachel (Fernando), Vinnie (Marissa), Brandon (Caitlinn), Aaron, Austin, Michaela and Julianne; her 9 great-grandchildren, Gerard (Desare), Hailey, Justin, Aiden, Giavanna, Zander, Zavier, Ofelia and Brady; her 2 great-great-grandchildren, Tristan and Anthony; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday, August 18 at Edward’s Funeral Home, 606 Walnut Street, Doniphan, MO.    Visitation scheduled for 10:00am, Funeral at 11:00am, followed by burial at Pope’s Chapel Cemetery and Life Celebration luncheon & fellowship at Currentview Church of Christ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Currentview Church of Christ, c/o Kirk Brady, RR 1 Box 2275, Doniphan, MO 63935
