Norman William Smith, 87, of Doniphan, Missouri, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Current River Nursing Center in Doniphan.
Mr. Smith, son of Walter E. and Pearl R. (Fagan) Smith, was born February 26, 1925, in Oregon County, Missouri. He was a contractor/farmer. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing and traveling and was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Carter Hall #3 during World War II.
On May 26, 1951, he was married to Marjorie Ellen Stone in Bay, Arkansas. She survives. They had a double wedding with Lawrence and Martha (McDonald) Fagan.
Also surviving are two daughters, Ellen Sue Griffith and husband, Mike, of Springfield, Missouri, and Norma Lee Smith Baker and husband, John, of Chesterfield, Missouri; two sisters, Vivian Yarber of Doniphan and Jane Bollenbacher of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; four grandchildren, John Joseph "Joe" Baker, Jake Baker, Sam Griffith and wife, Margo, and Katie Griffith; and two great-grandchildren, Cy Weston Griffith and Elizabeth Kate Griffith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Billy Joe Smith.
Visitation for Mr. Smith will be Monday evening, April 9, 2012, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service with full military honors will start at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, in the funeral home chapel with Brother Kent Wilfong officiating. Burial will follow in the Doniphan City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church.
