Veta F. Sutherland, 89, of Doniphan, Missouri, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at her residence. Mrs. Sutherland was born July 15, 1918, in Ripley County, Missouri. A former schoolteacher, Veta taught in several one-room rural schools and during World War II while her husband was overseas, she was a "Rosie the Riveter" working on an airplane assembly line in California. She was a bookkeeper for a local lumberyard and a caseworker for Family Services. In 1956 she joined her husband to create the AG Market, which was an important part of Doniphan for more than 26 years. After the sale of the store, she did sewing and needlework as long as her health permitted. She was a contestant in the Pillsbury Bake Off three times, winning a second prize in the cake category. Veta and Ed were very honored to serve as Grand Marshals of the 2004 Doniphan Labor Day Parade. The church was a very important part of Veta's life and she was a life-long active member of the First Church of God, as Sunday School teacher and superintendent and, along with Ed, was a leader of the youth group. They gave love, time and support to many young people over the years. On February 14, 1941, she was married to Edwin Sutherland at East Prairie, Missouri. He survives. Also surviving are one sister, Lois Madsen of Binghampton, New York, one brother, Jim Featherston of Rose Bud, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews who loved her very much. Mrs. Sutherland was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Featherston and Etta Rideout Featherston, two sisters, Clarice Braschler and Dorothy Lamb, and two brothers, Charles Featherson and E. E. "Gene" Featherston. Visitation will be Friday evening, July 4, 2008, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will be Saturday morning, July 5, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Church of God in Doniphan with Brother Larry Bashaw officiating. Burial will be in the Doniphan City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God Missions.
